I’m Michelle Szekely, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist providing compassionate, evidence-based therapy for individuals and couples. My work focuses on helping people heal attachment injuries, rebuild trust, and create more secure and meaningful connections in their closest relationships.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent years in clinical research development within corporate America. That experience gave me a practical understanding of the pressures many professionals face when trying to balance demanding careers with their most important relationships. At the same time, I hold deep respect and compassion for the realities of shift work, financial stress, and the everyday challenges that can strain even strong partnerships. I welcome clients from a wide range of backgrounds and life circumstances.
My Approach
I primarily use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with couples and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) with individuals. These research-supported approaches help people understand the emotional patterns and attachment needs that shape their relationships. I also integrate elements of the Gottman Method to offer practical tools that support everyday communication and connection.
In our work together, we create a safe, non-judgmental space to explore the protective strategies and negative cycles that keep you stuck. Whether the pain stems from recent betrayal or from deeper wounds that began in childhood with parents or caregivers, the goal is the same: to help you move toward greater emotional safety, clarity, and connection — at a pace that respects your nervous system and your life.
Areas of Focus
I have extensive experience supporting individuals and couples through:
- Infidelity and the complex process of rebuilding (or deciding about) trust
- Recovery from narcissistic or emotionally abusive relationship dynamics
- Attachment injuries, including those rooted in childhood experiences
- Emotional and physical intimacy concerns
- Relationship transitions, separation, and divorce
- LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy for individuals and couples
Telehealth for New Jersey & Illinois
All sessions are conducted via secure video telehealth. I am licensed to work with clients who are physically located in New Jersey or Illinois at the time of our sessions. This format offers flexibility for busy professionals, parents, and anyone who prefers the comfort and privacy of meeting from home.
A Note About Working Together
Therapy is most effective when you feel safe, respected, and genuinely understood. My style is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that lasting change becomes possible when people feel secure enough to be vulnerable. There is no pressure to move faster than feels right.
If you’re ready to explore whether we might be a good fit, I invite you to schedule a complimentary 20-minute consultation. It’s a simple, low-pressure way to begin.
